The Narrative Science and Tableau partnership began nearly five years ago because of an aligned vision to bring data understanding to everyone in an organization. Narrative Science began embedding their data stories into Tableau dashboards to help analysts communicate their data insights to more business users.

 

The Art of the Possible for Business Intelligence + Data Storytelling

Earlier this year, the Narrative Science and Tableau team got together to brainstorm the ‘art of the possible’ on uniting the two technologies to take the partnership even further, and scale data understanding to even more people in their customer organizations.

In the past few years, Tableau has made incredible strides to become the central source-of-truth for their clients’ data. Tableau has continued to innovate and look for new ways to bring data to people who need it, whether through a dashboard interface or through other methods.

As a next phase in the partnership, Narrative Science and Tableau have integrated Tableau dashboards into Narrative Science’s newest data storytelling product Lexio, a standalone platform that turns data into interactive stories, to bring data insights to even more people in new ways.

 

Integrating Tableau and Lexio

Lexio provides an alternative communication layer for the data and analytics in Tableau dashboards, and works especially well with business users that are not logging into or do not have access to dashboards today.

Lexio connects to several data sources, including SaaS applications, data warehouses, and most recently, business intelligence products like Tableau. 

To get started, users simply have to paste a URL to their dashboard into Lexio. 

Lexio ingests the underlying data and metadata from the Tableau dashboard and then uses the metrics to automatically build data stories in Lexio.

Lexio’s underlying intelligence and ontology can automatically read the dashboard intent and infer which metrics are important to someone that wants to consume insights from the data. Lexio then uses that information to start configuring and ‘bookmarking’ stories on the user’s behalf.

A bookmark is a data story that is saved with certain filters applied that a user may want to see. Lexio will automatically set bookmarks for the user. Then, once users read the data stories, they will have access to all of the dimensions that were in the Tableau dashboard to explore.

The two technologies are fully integrated, so when analysts make changes to the Tableau dashboards, or the underlying data updates, those changes will also be reflected in Lexio’s data stories.

Many business users do not know where to start when it comes to interpreting data, and data stories remove that barrier. Data stories are in plain language, so anyone can understand them and they leave little up to interpretation.

Lexio’s data stories also provide an augmented data discovery experience by providing recommended stories to read next, guiding business users through the data in an easy, digestible way. 

Lexio is available both on desktop and on mobile, further unlocking the ability to provide data insights to employees that are often on-the-go.
