Survey shows plain-English explanations of charts and graphs are more impactful than visualizations alone

Overview

Narrative Science conducted a survey in which two hundred participants were randomly split into two groups. Half received a traditional dashboard with just visualizations. The other group received a dashboard with the visualization accompanied by a story. Both were asked to complete a ten question quiz to gage understanding. A goal was to determine: “Do dashboard viewers with access to stories outperform?”

Results

  • Participants with stories were able to recognize revenue and trends two times more often than users without stories
  • More accuracy in those participants 11% who had access to stories, outperforming those who did not

“It was hard to work with the dashboard alone to get anything meaningful out of it, so I had to guess a lot.” – Survey Participant
