We’re excited to introduce Story Navigator for Tableau.
It’s the best way to write about a broader set of data and allows your stakeholders to explore deeper analysis.
Think of Story Navigator as a new way to tell stories in dashboards. It allows for a faster, more flexible user experience and comprehensive narrative. Notably, a user can now analyze up to two dimensions and multiple measures within one story, and navigate to different levels of the hierarchy within the user interface.
And it’s faster — much faster, especially for larger data sets. We’ve optimized our core analytics service, leading to half the response times for Continuous stories.
What does Story Navigator mean for you?
Dashboard builders become storytellers. Builders can tell the full story by presenting more information to the reader in one story and using this story to complement their visualizations. A builder can anticipate a user’s needs and the questions that they would ask next, and build the navigation of their story to answer those questions. They can also use Story Navigator to find what’s important to their analysis even faster.
Dashboard readers are empowered to interact with the narrative as if they were an analyst exploring a dashboard – drilling deeper into measures and dimensions, slicing the story in different ways to get to the insights most valuable to them.
How can you use Story Navigator?

This example uses the Tableau tourism dashboard.
1. Create a story with two dimensions and two or more measures. You’ll see a small number in the corner of each pill, this notates the order of the dimension or measure in your story. Order the dimension hierarchy in the order that is relevant to your data. For example, Region would be my primary dimension and Country as my secondary since Country is a level below Region. The order of your measures relates to the positioning of the measure in the story.
2. Create a Discrete or Continuous story.
3. The initial story is called your home story. The top portion labeled “Aggregated Breakdown” shows an analysis broken out by each measure (ordered by your pills in the first step) and the two dimensions.
Then if you scroll down to “Top Region Breakdown” (Region was my primary dimension during setup), it has three of my top primary dimension values analyzed by all three measures. If there is no overlap between your dimensions, you won’t see this breakdown section.
4. The new blue headers within the home story are clickable and allow a user to see a different story view for the specified dimensions/measures. Use the back arrow to return to the home story.
5. If you click on a value with a dotted line, you’re able to filter the dashboard accordingly and then select the Clear Filters bar in order to reset your filters back to the original.
This is only the beginning of Story Navigator.
Over the next few months, you can expect Configurable Driver Analysis (think expanded inclusion logic, dynamic thresholds, and coverage over dimension hierarchies) and the ability to go as deep as five dimensions in a hierarchy.
