Growth leaders only care about two things. Why are they so hard to get?

Really, it shouldn’t be this hard.
If you are responsible for your company’s growth (like I am), there are only two things that should keep you up at night. First, hitting your near-term number. Second, building a predictable process for growth. That’s it.
This seems simple, but it doesn’t always shake out this way. There are a lot of metrics that go into these things, and, let’s be honest, they are f#$%ing hard to get today. Here’s what happens in every company (mine included):
- You have an upcoming meeting where you need to do a readout on your growth numbers.
- You have your high-level dashboard of the metrics, but this meeting requires you to get underneath these core metrics.
- You start opening the different systems you use—your CRM, dashboard tool(s), web analytics, other sales and marketing productivity tools, and your product usage tool (if that is something you indeed track).
- You inevitably can’t find what you need, so you go find someone who is better at data than you are (this could be a rev ops person, a sales ops person, a data analyst, or some lucky data-savvy person on your team).
- You ask them a question, and they ask you when you need the numbers. You secretly think, “How about right now?!,” but patiently answer that you’d like them as soon as possible.
- Your data-savvy savior sends you a beautiful dashboard full of the metrics you need.
- You open it … and still don’t get what you need.
- You send a question to your data guy or gal, and they answer you.
- Rinse and repeat. And repeat. And repeat.
As a leader of growth, it feels like groundhog day.
You sit back and your mind wanders. You go through a series of questions: why is this so f#$%ing difficult? Why can’t someone or something figure out what exactly I need to know to have the biggest impact on our business? And furthermore, if that is actually possible, why can’t I get this type of insight sent to me every day or, better yet, on-demand when I need it?
Your mind wanders a bit further—what would happen if this was my experience?
You wouldn’t wait for the meeting to look at growth metrics in detail. You’d just know the numbers and make decisions based on them, every single day. In fact, everyone in that meeting would know the numbers. You wouldn’t even need the meeting.
You’d be more confident and sleep better because you know exactly what’s happening. You’d be able to leave your data-savvy coworkers alone and let them focus on higher-value tasks than getting you metrics that you and other leaders should already know.
You would know every day where to focus your time to remove the barriers preventing your team from hitting this quarter’s number. Your team also would know where to spend time growing the number next quarter. And the next.
You would have formed a daily habit for predictable growth across your team and company.
Then, you snap out of it and get back to reality.
