Creating Something Out of Nothing

By: Natalie Murray

Have you ever analyzed the design of a book?

Let’s take your favorite book for example:

  • What does the cover look and feel like?
  • What colors or typefaces are being used?
  • What is the style of each chapter page?

You may not know the answers to any of these questions, I know that I didn’t. When reading a book, you’re likely focused on the content, but the design is an important component of your experience, and let me tell you, there are so many things to consider.

These are all questions I began to ask myself as I designed the cover for “Let Your People Be People”.

I’ve never designed a cover before, so I started with exploring my bookshelf at home. I began to notice what I liked about the design and what I didn’t.

I then started prototyping. I knew that I wanted the design to be something that I would love to have on my coffee table. The design had to be approachable, human, yet credible. The job of the designer is to draw the reader in and make their experience reading the book the best it can be. A reader should feel consistency from the moment they see the cover to the last page. The design should elevate the pages inside.

Below are some of the other designs I created and the final outcome. I love how it turned out and I hope you do, too.

I’ll leave you with a quote from LYPBP, Part 13, There is Only Make: “within all of us, we have the ability to create something out of nothing or to remix our surroundings into a creation that would not exist without us.”

Here is the final design:

Now it’s time to stop judging it by it’s cover. You can request a free copy for yourself.
